Microchip introduces the new dsPIC33EP

     Microchip Technology announced the introduction of the dsPIC33EP "GS" series of digital Signal controllers (DSC) with 14 new devices.The dsPIC33EP "GS" series offers superior performance for implementing more complex nonlinear prediction and adaptive control algorithms at higher switching frequencies.

     These advanced algorithms enable power supply designs to achieve better energy efficiency and power supply specifications. In addition, higher switching frequencies allow designers to develop denser, smaller power products at a lower cost. Compared to previous generation DSC products, the new dsPIC33EP "GS" device can reduce latency by half when applied to a three-pole, three-zero compensator, and can save up to 80% of energy consumption in any application.

     The new dsPIC33EP "GS" family of devices includes a variety of advanced features, such as instant-update flash memory capabilities that are especially useful for high-availability or "always-on" systems. The instant update function can be used to change the firmware of the working power supply, such as the active compensation calculation code, while maintaining continuous adjustment. Optimized for digital power, the new DSC family comes in several models, all in the industry's smallest 4x4mm UQFN package for space-constrained designs.

     The new family also has a number of other important features, including up to five 12-bit ADCs (for a total of 22 ADC inputs), providing a total throughput of 16Msps and ADC latency of 300 nanoseconds. In addition, the four analog comparators of the dsPIC33EP "GS" device are equipped with 12-bit Dacs for more precision demanding designs. The two on-chip programmable gain amplifiers can be used for current detection and other precision measurements. Integrating these advanced analog amplifiers on new devices reduces the number of external components required, saving both cost and board space. With these characteristics and their overall high performance, the dsPIC33EP "GS" series is suitable for a wide range of applications, covering the following markets: Computers and telecommunications (such as AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies), industrial (such as solar inverters, LED lighting, HID lighting, battery chargers, projectors and welders) and automotive (such as LED and HID headlights and DC/DC converters).
